Mallesons Stephen Jaques has been appointed by the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEx) to study the trading of emissions-related products in Hong Kong. The study is the first to be conducted by a leading stock exchange in Asia to assess the full range of carbon and environmental markets and possible trading options.
As lead consultant, Mallesons will work with subconsultants Climate Focus BV and International Environmental Trading Group to analyse the potential for the successful trading of emissions-related products. Climate change and clean energy partner Christopher Tung will lead the Mallesons team on the project. Christopher Tung is one of the few climate change law and carbon finance specialists based in Asia.
HKEx announced Mallesons’ appointment following a rigorous selection process which began in February 2007. The Mallesons bid preparation team included Managing Partner, China Larry Kwok, partners Christopher Tung and Richard Mazzochi, and lawyers Kate Trumbull, Paul McBride, Minny Siu and Sandy Au.
Christopher Tung said: “We are honoured that HKEx has chosen us to conduct this important study. The appointment, together with a string of other recent clean energy and carbon finance projects, validates our strategy of having a dedicated and multidisciplinary team of carbon finance and environmental lawyers based in Hong Kong and Beijing to provide a sophisticated and responsive service to clients around the world for projects in Asia. We look forward to achieving more success and to continue being a cutting edge service provider in this increasingly important space.”
The study is expected to conclude in approximately four months.
