A Sydney-based Mallesons lawyer has been recognised at a prestigious international construction industry competition for his study on Alliancing.
Andrew Chew was awarded second prize at the Bilfinger Berger Awards in Germany for his study on relationship-based contracting in public-private partnerships. He takes a close look at the alliancing concept in Australia, and explores potential lessons to be transferred to Germany.
The Bilfinger Berger Awards is a new international competition set to identify best practice solutions in the complex web of interaction between society, business and government. The aim of this award is to promote the transfer of knowledge across borders and to explore the question of how solutions which have proven successful in one country can be transferred to other countries.
Andrew, Special Counsel in the Mallesons construction group, assists with the legal aspects of alliancing contracts. He has worked on a number of top alliancing deals such as the Air Warships Destroyer alliancing project and the Kupe Gas Development project in New Zealand.
On discussing why he chose his topic, Andrew says “Alliancing has been used successfully to deliver a number of major complex infrastructure and building projects in Australia and other countries, and it would be an innovative procurement process to adopt in Germany.”
On receiving his award he says “It was extremely pleasing to be selected as one of the winners of this prestigious award and to showcase Australia’s expertise. It was an opportunity to contribute to enhancing project delivery and best for project outcomes in Germany.”
Cordelia Polinna, an urban planner from Berlin was awarded first prize for her study of “Idea Stores” in London’s Tower Hamlets district. Dr. Georgina Santos, lecturer at Oxford University, received third prize for her study on the London City traffic congestion scheme.
Herbert Bodner, Chairman of the Executive Board at Bilfinger Berger and jury Chairman Klaus Töpfer, presented the results of the Awards with prizes totalling €70,000.
