Mallesons Stephen Jaques has advised Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair in respect of their global carbon offset program, the first to be launched by Asian airlines.
The FLY greener program allows passengers to voluntarily offset the carbon dioxide emissions of their flight by using cash or frequent flyer miles. The offset payments effectively contribute to the airlines’ purchase of carbon credits generated by projects that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
Mallesons assisted Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair with the development and implementation of the carbon offset program. Climate change and clean energy partner Christopher Tung led the Mallesons team on the project.
Christopher Tung said: “FLY greener represents cutting edge carbon offsetting practice and we believe that it will set a new benchmark in the aviation industry”.
Mallesons’ climate change and clean energy team of 10 partners and 25 lawyers provides a full range of specialist legal services in Asia and Australia to clean energy and carbon market participants around the world. The team has been involved in several cutting-edge projects including recently acting as lead consultant to the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEx) on its study of the trading of emissions-related products in Hong Kong.
Mallesons is also the only Australian law firm to be ranked by Chambers Global 2008 in the Climate Change (Global Practice Area) category.
