Matthew Coleman, Technology Manager, Hong Kong
I began working at Mallesons full time in Hong Kong in April 1998 as the technology support officer. When I joined the firm, the Hong Kong office was comprised of around 22 staff. After a number of expansions and a merger, the office is now 135 staff strong and I am now employed as Technology Manager. As well as the Hong Kong office, I also look after Beijing and Shanghai.
The growth of the regional offices in the last 5 years has meant we have had to move premises: twice in Hong Kong and once in Beijing and China. I have been lucky to be involved with project managing the technology side of these moves and must say that I have found this to be a very fulfilling and challenging role.
Since I began working here there has been a up learning curve but I have felt supported the entire way by the technology department in Australia. In my time here, I have found that Mallesons works well as a team and embraces technology and new technologies wholeheartedly. It is a great environment to constantly learn new skills and is never boring as we are always looking at new ways to support the various practices.
I have a great working relationship with my colleagues both in the Hong Kong and overseas offices. I enjoy providing user support as well as back end system support. There is an excellent `can do' attitude throughout the firm and as a shared service, I enjoy being part of a team that delivers.
My day-to-day role is often varied but never dull. For example, one recent case called for technology support in a court room whereby we had to provide on site assistance. Sometimes I am also required to offer off-site data room and conference support.
Sometimes a pressing matter can call for long hours or overnight work, but I don't mind this as the firm always shows appreciation for hard work and professionalism.
As a shared service, my main role is to ensure that my `clients' (all staff) enjoy trouble free days with the computer and phone systems. As the legal staff are constantly working with tight deadlines, often I am working under pressure to get results and get them quickly so that as little disruption is caused as possible.
Socialising is also an enjoyable part of the Hong Kong office and everyone mixes in well from all practice groups and shared services. As well as monthly food and drink gatherings, we also partake in the annual dragon boat races as well as other activities throughout the year such as hiking and touch rugby.
