Nia Cahyadi, Graduate Secretary, Sydney

I commenced my graduate secretary training in January 2008. At first I was anxious and nervous about working at such a highly recognised firm in Australia. However, Mallesons staff and lawyers proved from the first day that that they were very friendly and helpful, which made the transition from study into work easier.

The Graduate Secretarial Program allowed me to rotate to different practice groups within the firm, which enabled me to gain a better understanding of how different areas of law functioned. The rotations system benefited me as it allowed me to build relationships with both lawyers and support staff widely across the firm. The program also offered a wide range of training such as technology, client building, team work that enhances work effectiveness and allowed me to build new skills in order to work at my best. Through my rotations I was also placed with a mentor/coach who helped me settle in with the Mallesons work ethic whilst preparing me for the responsibilities for a permanent role as a legal secretary towards the end of the year.

The one thing that stands out in Mallesons would be the high focus that they place on their staff. They ensure that my needs as an employee are being met and allowed room for me to build on my capabilities.

Being part of the Mallesons team has enriched both my knowledge and skills in the legal industry and I have confidence that it will also prepare me for what is ahead in the future.
