Edwina Chin, Articled Clerk, Intellectual Property and Technology, Melbourne

I began at Mallesons in March this year as an Articled Clerk and have genuinely enjoyed the experience of my first few months with the firm. Although the transition from the relaxed and academic life of a university student to a member of a full-time working profession initially appeared daunting, the change has been significantly eased by the firm’s proven and supportive graduate program.

As with many of the Articled Clerks in my year, I undertook a seasonal clerkship at Mallesons during my time at uni. This was an great opportunity to experience what it was like to work at the firm first-hand and to meet a wide range of people, both from Mallesons and other seasonal clerks (many of whom have ended up with me here this year!).

I’ve just moved into my second rotation for the year (Intellectual Property & Technology) and am really enjoying both the subject matter and the litigious nature of my work. As with my last rotation in Competition, I’ve found the people to be extremely supportive, inclusive and genuinely interested in you. The work I’ve done in both rotations has been very diverse, including drafting contracts and advice, and attending court and meetings with counsel.

I’ve also been impressed with the way in which Mallesons caters for a wide range of interests. As part of the Human Rights Law Group, I’ve been exposed to some really interesting human rights work and issues, particularly through having a range of human rights specialists come to speak at the firm.

Aside from work, I’ve met some great people here and have been enjoying the social side of Mallesons. Our Articled Clerk group gets along really well and often catches up for Friday night drinks and birthdays or housewarmings on the weekends. There’s also been a huge number of social events, both within my practice groups and firm wide, courtesy of which I’ve been exposed to some fantastic new Melbourne restaurants! Overall, it has been a great start to the year and to working in the legal profession.
