Cara Hegarty, Law Clerk, Banking and Finance, Sydney

When I joined Mallesons I said I was eager to experience a broad range of work, and I have certainly been given plenty of variety! As a summer clerk my first rotation was in the Workplace and Employee Relations group (part of M&A) where I was exposed to advisory work, corporate employment work and court matters. I was able to get very involved in the group's work, and I was invited to attend the NSW Industrial Relations Commission and some client meetings with my supervising Partner.

The work done by the Acquisition and Leverage Finance team (part of Banking & Finance) where I did my second rotation, could not have been more different! There I was able to experience transactional work by drafting and amending deeds and agreements, researching market conditions and attending multi-party negotiations. The work was high-profile and fast-paced, and it was great that I got to feel part of 'the deal'.

I enjoyed being a summer clerk in both groups so much that this year I have been working in both as a law clerk. For even more variety, I have also been working casually as a law clerk for the construction group. Working in so many different groups, and with so many solicitors and Partners, has been fantastic - I have received an insight into how diverse the job of a 'commercial lawyer' is, and I have learnt a lot about many new areas of law.

In a few weeks I am about to head off overseas for a long holiday to celebrate the completion of my law degree, however, I am looking forward to returning to Mallesons in the near future.
