King & Wood Mallesons receives NBCF Patron's Award

Tbreastcancer_tony.jpghe National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) Patron’s Awards are the NBCF’s premier event held to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of all members of the NBCF community. In March 2012, King & Wood Mallesons was awarded the “Corporate Commitment to Workplace Giving Award 2011” at the NBCF Patron’s Awards ceremony held at Admiralty House in Kirribilli. Tony O’Malley, Managing Partner, Australia and Deputy Chair, Mallesons in the Community, accepted the award on behalf of King & Wood Mallesons and was presented with the award by the Governor General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO. The award recognises the significant support King & Wood Mallesons has provided to the NBCF through the Workplace Giving program.

Since its launch in 2001, the Workplace Giving program has enabled Partners and Staff to donate over AU$7 million to the charities we support across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, with the firm matching staff donations dollar for dollar. The NBCF became a charity partner in 2005, and in this time partners and staff have shown tremendous support for the NBCF by donating over AU$220,000.

Winners announced for inaugural Mallesons Aspire Award

In October 2011, Mallesons launched the Mallesons Aspire Award – a national scholarship program designed to help disadvantaged students achieve their tertiary education goals. The launch marked the tenth anniversary of the Mallesons in the Community program as well as the tenth anniversary of Mallesons’ partnership with The Smith Family.

Working with The Smith Family, each of our Australian offices identified an outstanding student who would benefit from this scholarship, which includes $9,000 apportioned over Year 12 and the first two years of tertiary studies, as well as ongoing support and guidance from a Mallesons mentor.

We are pleased to announce that the following Year 11 students are the winners of the inaugural Mallesons Aspire Award:

Together for a Cause
- Mallesons partners and staff give back to the community

Throughout October 2011, staff and partners in all Australian Mallesotogether_for_a_cause3.jpgns centres participated in a range of volunteer activities to mark 10 years of our Mallesons in the Community program. The aim of this initiative - entitled Together for a Cause - was to allow Mallesons staff members to “give back” to worthwhile causes in the community through a wide range of team-based volunteering activities.  More than 220 partners and staff participated in over 30 activities, such as assisting at Parkerville Children and Youth Care’s annual Kids Fun Run (Perth); spring-cleaning Home in Queanbeyan (Canberra); supporting Oxfam Australia’s Grow campaign (Sydney); assisting at the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s official Pink Ribbon Breakfast at Flemington Racecourse (Melbourne); and decorating the Starlight Express Room at the Mater Hospital (Brisbane).

Our Hong Kong office also joined the celebrations, with a photography competition in October and a range of other activities scheduled for the remainder of the year.

Focus on children’s rights in Australia

Mallesons has recently been involved in the preparation of the 2011 NGO Report to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.  A team of around 15 Mallesons graduates and solicitors worked on the report and one of our Sydney lawyers, Sarah Hoff, was seconded to the National Children’s and Youth Law Centre (NCYLC) to act as Project Manager for this initiative.  The NGO Report, which is compiled every five years, considers whether Australia is meeting its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and incorporates issues, ideas and recommendations from a range of non government organisations and their employees.  With the NGO Report completed, a delegation (including Sarah) will shortly travel to Geneva to officially present it to the Committee.

To coincide with the completion and lodgement of the NGO Report, our Sydney office hosted a special Child Rights seminar in late July 2011.  Organised in conjunction with the NCYLC, UNICEF and the Child Rights Taskforce, the seminar focussed on ways that children’s rights might be improved in Australia.  The speakers included Associate Professor Judith Cashmore AO (Sydney University) and Catherine Branson QC (President and Human Rights Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission).  Our Melbourne office also hosted a similar event in September 2011.

Mallesons supports award winning sustainable seafood campaign

Mallesons is thrilled to announce that our community partner, the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), has won the Seafood Industry Victoria Award for excellence in promoting Victorian seafood. This award recognises ACF’s efforts to improve the assessment of seafood sustainability, and raise consumer awareness about seafood choices, through its Sustainable Australian Seafood Assessment Program. Mallesons partners and staff support ACF’s Healthy Oceans Campaign through our Workplace Giving program, and our Melbourne kitchen has worked with ACF to introduce sustainable seafood items at our events. This is the first time that a conservation group has won the award and we are very proud of our association with ACF and its excellent programs.
