We set up our Beijing office in 1993 and were one of the first foreign law firms to obtain a licence to operate in mainland China.
Our China practice has some 75 dedicated Mandarin-speaking lawyers based in our offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai. We are supported by colleagues in our Australian offices. Some of our team have over 20 years’ experience advising multinational corporations doing business in China.
We offer a full service commercial capability covering banking and structured finance, capital markets, climate change and clean energy, corporate (including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, foreign direct investment), dispute resolution, litigation and international arbitration, employment, energy and resources, intellectual property and information technology, projects, construction and environment. To find out more information about our capability, please use the links to the left.
As well as advising multinational clients on their investments in China, our lawyers assist Chinese enterprises with their investments throughout the region, on trade with, and investment in, Australia and on international capital raising. Our knowledge of local business culture and language skills contributes commercial value to our clients’ transactions.
We have experience in key industries including financial services and insurance, manufacturing, food, education, energy (including renewables, oil, gas and coal), mining, telecommunications, transport and infrastructure, healthcare, media and entertainment and commercial property.
The regulations governing foreign law firms in China do not license us to advise or provide legal opinions on matters relating to Chinese law. If our clients need this type of advice, we have entrustment arrangements with local law firms.
