Lawyers in our team have recently advised on the following transactions:

  • Acting for the lead arranger of the bridge loan and take-out financing for the leveraged buy-out of Maxis Communications in Malaysia, which included a M$12 billion Islamic senior bond issue (Sukuk al Musharaka) and a M$3 billion Islamic hybrid junior bond issue. This was Malaysia’s largest Sukuk issue to date and received “Deal of the Year 2007” awards from Asiamoney and Finance Asia.
  • Acting for the sponsors in relation to the US$800 million dual-currency project financing of petrochemical plants in Malaysia comprising both conventional loans and Islamic bonds. This financing received 6 “Deal of the Year” awards in 2005.
  • Acting for the lead managers (including several Middle Eastern financial institutions) arranging Indonesia’s first international Sukuk.
  • Acting for two development banks on the limited-recourse financing of a power project in Pakistan involving both conventional and Islamic financing.
  • Acting for a lead arranger in relation to a leveraged buy-out by a private equity firm of businesses listed in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, including advising on an Islamic refinancing using a Murabaha structure.
  • Providing advice to various financial institutions and investors in relation to the structuring of Islamic finance transactions in Australia, including providing taxation and regulatory advice.
