National consumer credit regulation: 18-24 months and national consumer law - 3 October 2008
The Australian Federal and State and Territory Governments yesterday released their plan for the national regulation of credit. The timetable is 18 to 24 months for a wide-ranging transformation of Australian financial regulation by October 2010.

Voluntary Guide to Handling Personal Information Security Breaches released - 28 August 2008
The Federal Privacy Commissioner has issued a final version of the Voluntary Guide to Handling Personal Information Security Breaches (Guide). The Guide has been designed to assist public sector agencies and private sector organisations (Organisations) to prevent, and respond effectively to, breaches of personal information security.

ALRC recommends changes to regulation of health information - 12 August 2008
The Australian Law Reform Commission has recommended significant changes to the regulation of health information handling. If adopted, the recommendations would sweep away the current patchwork of overlapping and inconsistent State and Federal regulations and replace them with nationally consistent laws on health privacy.

Major privacy reforms proposed by ALRC - 11 August 2008
The Australian Law Reform Commission has today recommended major changes to privacy laws, affecting all private sector entities. Within 12 to 18 months, the Federal Government will replace the National Privacy Principles, changing how organisations can collect and use personal information. Special requirements will apply to health and credit information, with enhancements to the scope of credit reporting.

Proposed restrictions on outbound telemarketing - 30 May 2006
The Do Not Call Register Bill 2006 was introduced into Federal Parliament on 25 May 2006. Organisations that rely on outbound telemarketing to reach their Australian customers will be significantly affected if the Bill is passed. The Bill allows for civil penalties (for repeat offenders) of up to $1.1million for a body corporate and $220,000 for a person other than a body corporate.
