Carbon finance
This web site is maintained by the World Bank's Carbon Finance Unit and contains a range of information on methodologies, projects and new developments in carbon markets. The CFU is actively involved in supporting greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects in developing countries.

CDM and JI Validation and Verification Manual
In 2002 the International Emissions Trading Association and the World Bank Carbon Finance Group/Prototype Carbon Fund commenced a process to produce the CDM and JI Validation and Verification Manual. The completed manual can be used by stakeholders involved in the development, financing, validation and verification of projects. This version of the manual replaces the earlier Preliminary Validation Manual, which was issued in November 2000.

Greenhouse Gas Assessment Handbook

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

The IPCC’s Second Assessment Report, Climate Change 1995, provided key input to the negotiations, which led to the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC in 1997.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
In 1994, this International Treaty entered into force with the aim to reduce global warming. The Kyoto Protocol, an addition to the Treaty, sets legally binding target for emission reductions on those nations which have ratified it.

EMISSIONS TRADING

Emissions trading is a market-based scheme for environmental improvement that allows parties to buy and sell permits for emissions or credits for reductions in emissions of certain pollutants.
