10 July 2008

Mallesons Stephen Jaques has achieved an outstanding result in the latest Thomson Reuters Asia Pacific (ex Japan) half-year league tables, being ranked No.1 for completed deals.

Mallesons completed Asia Pacific (ex Japan) deals valued at US$36.9 billion in the period Jan-June 2008, an increase of nearly 22% on the corresponding period in 2007. The top ranking represents an 18.7% market share, putting Mallesons ahead of both Australian and international competitors and nearly 3% ahead of the firm’s nearest rival.

Mallesons was No.2 for Asia (ex-Japan) completed deals, with a 15.5% market share and only 0.1% difference between the top two legal advisers.

The firm’s outstanding Asia-Pacific results have been matched by our strong performance in the Thomson Reuters Australia and UK tables.

Thomson Reuters ranked Mallesons No.2 in completed M&A deals in Australia/NZ, with a value of US$16 billion, and No. 4 in the UK tables, where Mallesons displaced Magic Circle firms Freshfields and Slaughters with announced deals worth US$39 billion.

Managing Partner, Practice Stuart Fuller said: “Our rankings are a reflection of the overall depth and strength of Mallesons' M&A practice, as well as the significance of our regional and international client base.”

Mr Fuller added: “The results reflect the type of transactions that our clients entrust to us, consistent with our position as a leading regional firm. Mallesons has made a significant investment in building our offshore capabilities over the last two decades and we continue to see the results of this investment."

Managing Partner, China Larry Kwok said: “We are extremely happy with the results and continue to be active across key geographies and industries. Despite the current issues in the global markets, we see the medium term outlook for Asia as positive. Having been in the region for many years, we are able to demonstrate to our clients a deep understanding of the different markets we service.”
