 Professional Biography

 
  • Sharon Henrick is the Head of our Competition Law & Regulatory Group.

    Sharon principally advises clients on large scale commercial transactions and investigations which have a competition law application in Australia or the Asia Pacific Region.

    Sharon represents clients before a range of competition agencies, including the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the New Zealand Commerce Commission, the Competition Commission of Singapore and the Korea Fair Trade Commission and advises clients across a number of sectors, including in manufacturing, construction, media, mining, energy, aviation, pharmaceutical, health, financial services, food and beverages, technology and media sectors.

    Sharon is listed as a "leading individual" in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2011) where she is described by one person as "one of the best competition law practitioners I have ever encountered in any jurisdiction"; she is listed as a "leading lawyer" in the International Financial Law Review (2011); "endorsed" by PLC Which Lawyer (2011), featured in Global Competition Law Review's The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists (2011) and ranked in Chambers Asia Pacific Guide (2012).

  • Sharon has presented papers on competition law topics at legal conferences in Australia and Asia. She is one of the lecturers for Sydney University's Masters of Laws and has presented papers at the International Bar Association's conferences in Dubai in 2011 and Singapore in 2007 as well as the 5th Seoul Competition Forum in 2008 (where she was a keynote speaker), as well as at various conferences in Australia.

    Sharon is a co-author of a chapter on Australian merger law in "Merger Control Worldwide," published by Cambridge University Press. She has published several articles on competition law, including in the Australian Trade Practices Law Journal and Competition Insights, a European journal and is a regular contributor to PLC Which Lawyer's and Global Competition Review's publications.

    Before commencing her career as a lawyer, Sharon was a Registered Nurse who specialised in critical care. She gained the award of dux of her critical care course and was awarded the special performance in nursing prize for her contribution to cardiac care.

  • Sharon's recent matters include assisting:
  • the Gladstone Ports Corporation (the world's second largest coal export port), including in relation to an authorisation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission of the Wiggins Island expansion and in relation to towage arrangements in the Port
  • British Airways across the Asia Pacific region in relation to successive authorisations by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission of British Airways' joint venture with Qantas and in relation to investigations of cartel conduct, including in respect of litigation in Australia, Korea and New Zealand
  • Lion on its privatisation by Kirin and in respect of various acquisitions in the food and beverages industry
  • Chinalco on its acquisition of stakes in Rio Tinto
  • ArcelorMittal's and Peabody's acquisition of MacAurthur Coal
  • Nestle's in relation to various acquisitions
  • Universal Pictures on its joint venture with Sony
  • DIC on its acquisition of Pacific Inks
  • Hancock in relation to its proposed acquisition of forestry assets in South Australia
  • Citigroup on its sale of EMI to Universal and Sony in the recorded music and music publishing industries
  • Travelex on the sale of its global payments business to Western Union
  • Global Television on its acquisition of Cutting Edge
  • Sharon regularly advises a range of other clients, including Microsoft, Intel, Hanson, Primary Healthcare, Chevron and Veda Advantage.
  • Sharon has assisted one of Australia's largest retailers to formulate and successfully implement a strategy to progressively acquire smaller competitors, has developed innovative solutions to gain competition clearances for clients in concentrated industries, including in the telecommunications and television industries and the healthcare sector, and has lead the firm's media practice team.
