Professional biography
Peter Stockdale is a Partner in the Sydney office of Mallesons Stephen Jaques where he specialises in dispute resolution, litigation, insurance and reinsurance law. Peter acts for several of the firm's largest clients both in Australia and overseas and is ranked among the best litigators in Australia and the world.
He has a strong reputation for his strategic skills in resolving disputes, using all forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution and for a solutions-based approach to commercial disputes. His pragmatic approach sees him retained by many of Australia's leading professional service firms and their insurers.
Peter has had a particular interest in reinsurance law since 1984, working in the Australian, London and Bermudan markets. He has provided a full range of services to many reinsurers including advice on treaty wordings, commutation agreements and the resolution of a wide variety of contentious issues. Peter also has a specialised knowledge of Royal Commissions and Judicial Commissions of Enquiry having acted for State Rail in both the Glenbrook and Waterfall Commissions, for Reinsurers in the HIH Royal Commission and most recently in the Cole Inquiry into the Australian Wheat Board.
Euromoney nominated Peter in the "Best of the Best" guide in 2005, 2007 and again in 2009 as one of Australia's leading Insurance and Reinsurance lawyers. He has been listed in Chambers Global Guide as one of the country's leading commercial litigators consistently since 2002.
Peter has bee listed as a leading individual in the areas of Dispute Resolution and Insurance by APL 500 2008/2009. He was also listed in PLC Which Lawyer 2009 for Dispute Resolution.
Chambers Global Guide 2009 described Peter as "an expert in insurance and reinsurance law, and a 'great litigator who is really well respected in the insurance market'..."
