Professional biography
Robert Cooper is a partner in our Melbourne office with over 15 years' experience advising clients on intellectual property law generally and especially on all aspects of IP disputes and licensing issues. He is increasingly active in resolving complex IT disputes and has successfully acted for telecommunications, publishing and e-commerce clients in this area.
Robert has acted for clients in a broad range of IP disputes in Australia and England involving patents, trade marks, copyright, designs, passing off, section 52/53 issues and confidential information. He has successfully acted for clients in the Federal Court and Full Federal Court in Australia and the High Court and Appeal Court in England. He is a registered trade marks attorney and acts for many Australian and international brands in obtaining trade mark protection in Australia and assisting clients in protecting their brands overseas.
Robert has a Masters degree in Computing and has acted for clients in patent disputes in areas such as business methods, mobile telecommunications, pharmaceutical compounds and process, financial services, methods of treatment, multi-valent vaccines, mechanical devices, heavy engineering, industrial refrigerants and various consumer goods. He has experience in acting in substantial multi-jurisdictional patent disputes for patentees and revokers.
His non-patent experience includes acting for medical device, software and telecommunication clients in copyright infringement disputes, acting for trade mark owners and defendants in the food, clothing and footwear industries and acting in substantial trade secret disputes for listed companies and individuals. Robert has also represented European and US clients in substantive anti-counterfeiting campaigns in England, Europe and Australia.
Rob has been acknowledged in respected international peer reviewed surveys for his expertise in IP Law including 'Best Lawyers in Australia 2009' and 'World's Leading Patent Law Practioners 2009'.
