 Professional Biography

  • Tim Bednall is the Managing Partner of the KWM Australian M&A and Tax practices.

    The KWM M&A practice lead the Australian M&A league tables for both deal value and deal numbers in FY2014. The KWM Tax practice is the largest law firm tax practice in Australia.

    Tim is based in our Sydney office where he also practices in mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory and competition law. Tim has advised a number of leading companies in major M&A transactions (including Medibank Private, Brambles, BG Group, Telstra, Alinta Energy, Challenger, ING Real Estate, Glencore / Xstrata, ASX, Stockland and Westpac).

    Tim is named as an “Eminent Practitioner” in Corporate / M&A by Chambers Global Guide 2014, after being recommended by Chambers as a Leading Individual, Band 1, for many years. He is also recommended as a "leading individual" by Asia Pacific Legal 500.

    Chambers Global Guide 2011 described Tim as "unshakable under pressure, sought out for his counsel on complicated and time-sensitive transactions".

    Tim was the Chairman of the Australian partnership of KWM from January 2010 to December 2012, during which time the combination between King & Wood and Mallesons Stephen Jaques was negotiated and implemented.

  • Advised Stockland on its successful takeover bid for Aevum, 2010.
  • Advised Challenger on the sale of its mortgage business to NAB, 2009.
  • Advised BG Group plc on its successful $5.6bn on-market takeover of Queensland Gas Company, 2008.
  • Advised BG Group plc on its bid for Origin Energy, 2008.
  • Advised Xstrata on its bids for Jubilee Mines and Resource Pacific, 2008.
  • Advised Time Inc on the sale of WHO magazine and other Australian titles, 2007.

  • Advised Southcorp Limited in relation to all acquisitions and disposals from 1986 to 2003.
  • Advised the South Australian Government in relation to the privatisation of the South Australian Electricity Supply Industry 1998 - 2000.
