Businesses now have their last opportunity to make submissions to the Henry Review of the Tax System, with a series of meetings announced for all capital cities to obtain public views.
The Henry Review is shaping up as the most significant review of the Australian tax system since the Asprey report in 1975 and will report to the Federal Government in December this year. It is taking account of both federal and state taxes, as well as interactions with the transfer system.
The Review’s initial discussion paper, Architecture of Australia’s tax and transfer system, which was released last August, is believed to have attracted approximately 500 submissions. Further issues were raised in a subsequent paper released in December entitled Australia’s Future Tax System Consultation Paper.
The Review Panel is chaired by the Secretary to the Treasury, Dr Ken Henry AC, and comprises Dr Jeff Harmer (Secretary of the Department of Family, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs), Professor John Piggott (University of New South Wales), Ms Heather Ridout (Australian Industry Group) and Mr Greg Smith (Australian Catholic University).
Final submissions on the Review can be made up until 1 May 2009.
