2009 Defence White Paper released - 4 May 2009

The Minister for Defence has today released the 2009 Defence White Paper, entitled “Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century: Force 2030”.

In February 2008 we alerted our Defence clients that the incoming Labor Government had moved quickly to announce the formation of a team to develop a new Defence White Paper.

Authored principally by Mr Michael Pezzullo, Deputy Secretary for Strategy, Coordination and Governance, the 2009 Defence White Paper is the key publicly available document that outlines policy priorities and directions for the Defence Organisation in the period to 2030.

The last Defence White Paper was published in December 2000, the previous (Howard) government choosing to release “updates” in 2003 and 2005, rather than a new White Paper.

Defence clients may be particularly interested in:

  • Chapters 7 - 10, which deal with ADF acquisitions and force structure priorities, and
  • Chapters 11 and 12, which deal with alliance relationships and intelligence.
