National OHS laws: time to have your say - 2 June 2008

The advisory panel conducting the review into the harmonisation of occupational health and safety laws has called for submissions on the optimal structure and content of national OHS laws.

The Federal Government took the first steps towards national occupational health and safety laws in April when it established the panel to make recommendations on model OHS legislation which could be adopted in each State and Territory of Australia. The matters to be reviewed by the panel were summarised in our alert dated 7 April 2008.

The panel has now released an issues paper which is designed to “provide information and raise issues about Australia’s OHS laws in order to stimulate discussion and encourage written submissions to the review”.

The issues paper contains 152 questions for parties to consider when making their submissions. It is important reading for all OHS practitioners.

The closing date for submissions is Friday, 11 July 2008. The panel will review all written submissions it receives and take account of these in making its recommendations. The panel intends to hold further targeted consultations with stakeholders before releasing the first tranche of its recommendations in October 2008.

Our National OHS Team would be pleased to discuss the issues paper with you and assist with the preparation of submissions to the panel.
