James is an experienced Special Counsel in the intellectual property team, where he specialises in trade marks and brand protection.

James has significant experience in all aspects of trade mark prosecution (clearance and filing) and enforcement (oppositions and litigation). He regularly advises clients on brand implementation and enforcement strategies, IP licensing and commercialisation, copyright, and related areas including consumer law and passing off. He also has a strong track record in domain name disputes (under the UDRP and auDRP). James’ experience and versatility make him a ‘one stop shop’ for some of Australia’s leading brands. 

James has extensive sector-specific experience in financial services, telecommunications and technology, FMCG and luxury consumer goods, online advertising and marketing, and conventional and renewable energy. He also brings an international perspective through his experience in the courts, tribunals, and intellectual property offices of the UK and New Zealand (having practised in both prior to Australia). James holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from the University of Oxford.
