King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) is delighted to have advised The University of Sydney on the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator (SBA), a transformative co-funded partnership project with NSW Health and Sydney Local Health District (SLHD).
The SBA will be a state-of-the-art biomedical research complex, spanning both the University’s campus and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. This cutting-edge facility will concentrate global biomedical research talent, driving innovation in Australia’s health and medical sciences sectors.
KWM acted as legal counsel for the University across all aspects of the project, including:
- negotiating a bespoke cooperation agreement between the University and SLHD to govern the delivery of the project, with the University appointed to manage project delivery on behalf of both parties; and
- preparing and negotiating a design and construction contract to engaged Richard Crookes Construction as the builder to deliver the SBA.
The KWM team was led by partners Steve Swan, Jessica Wallis, Stuart Dixon-Smith and Scott Bouvier, with support from Senior Associates Robyn Dimis and Nicole Morris and Solicitor Amy Sciffer.
Commenting on the deal, Steve Swan said:
“This is a groundbreaking project that will significantly enhance Sydney’s position as a global leader in biomedical research. We are proud to have played a key role in advising The University of Sydney on such an important development, supporting both their strategic growth and long-term innovation goals.”
Jess Wallis added:
“KWM has a long-standing relationship with The University and the KWM team valued the opportunity to bring their broad expertise across major projects, construction, environmental and planning law, intellectual property and governance matters to work alongside The University Team on this important project”.
