NSW Budget 2026-27: Rail, Metro and Light Rail Commitments Signalled in Transport Pipeline
This week, the 2026-27 NSW Budget was delivered by Treasurer Daniel Mookhey. Rail-related investment is led by a $16.1 billion commitment to Sydney Metro over four years, $2.4 billion in new investment for Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2, record annual heavy rail maintenance spending of $2.1 billion, and continued delivery of regional rail fleet renewal. Broadly, transport infrastructure investment has seen an uptick with an 8.4% increase compared to the prior Budget. Freight Policy Reform in NSW: Key Infrastructure Recommendations
In June 2025, the NSW Government released its final report on the state’s freight policy, prepared by an independent panel and accepted in full by the Minister for Transport. The Delivering Freight Policy Reform in NSW report sets out a strategic roadmap to futureproof NSW’s freight networks in light of the challenges posed by population growth, decarbonisation and changing technologies.

New sanctions for blocking railways in NSW
The NSW Parliament passed legislation on 21 November 2024 which introduces a maximum fine of $22,000 for the offence of obstructing a railway.
