Welcome to KWM’s deep dive into ASX200 AGMs in 2023

In 2023 economic and social issues were front-of-mind for shareholders at AGMs: the Voice, auditor accountability and executive pay in the face of cost-of-living pressures. Our annual report on AGMs of the ASX200 analyses the issues and emerging trends from calendar year 2023 and what they mean for companies

Key observations

2023 AGMs saw a continued increase in the number of ASX200 companies holding fully physical AGMs. However, hybrid meetings remained the preferred format, with 61% of AGMs opting for a hybrid meeting format.

Our report also finds that shareholders increasingly used strikes and votes against remuneration reports to express dissatisfaction in areas including share price volatility, company performance, leadership changes, reputational damage and governance issues.

Only 6 companies were requisitioned with shareholder resolutions relating to ESG matters (down from 11 in 2022 and 17 in 2021), although those resolutions received higher average support from shareholders.
